Black Theater By William Henry Brown - 941 Words

1.) During 1821 and 1926 Black Theater is determined in two different definitions. The first definition for Black Theater came about in 1821, and in Manhattan by the American Grove Theater founded by William Henry Brown. The definition for black theater was â€Å"created by African-Americans, for African-American audience and about topics that are important to the African American community. At this point in time, African Americans were enslaved throughout America. African-Americans did not have much rights, so the definition â€Å"created by African-Americans† was significant to show that they have a voice too, â€Å"for African American audience and about topics that are important to the African-American community† can be depicted so that African-Americans could rise up and overcome the Slavery system. This definition could have been geared towards African Americans being hopeful or having something to be happy about. Most significantly, for all African Americans com ing together to see these playwrights would educate black people and hopefully inspire them to create better lives for themselves together. Slavery and racial discrimination towards blacks has to be the most that contributed to this definition. The other definition was created in 1926 by W.E.B Du Bois through the Krigwa players in Harlem. This definition for black theater was â€Å"for, by, about, near us.† The Harlem Renaissance Movement is taking place during this time and contributes to the change in definition.
